Scott Matern

Scott Matern, 73, of Newfoundland, Pike County, died suddenly at home, surrounded by the love of his family, on Monday morning, April 6, 2026. His loving wife, Denise (Muta) Matern survives him. They were married on September 20, 1998.

Born July 13, 1952, in East Orange, New Jersey, Scott was the son of the late William and Joyce "Mickey" (DeFiest) Matern.

Scott was a gifted and talented artist. Following high school, he attended a collegiate art school. Scott was a self-taught artist, and because of this, he had his own meticulous style. His works of art consisted of oils, watercolors, murals, and clay sculptures. His love of Halloween consisted of growing pumpkins that grew their own faces. He loved Universal Models & collected them all.

Scott wrote many short stories which were usually about monsters, witches, and any type of horror. He enjoyed spending time outdoors and was an avid gardener. Scott expressed his love for animals; he always said he loved his animals more than he liked some humans.

He was an intelligent and thoughtful man who was not afraid to speak his mind and stand up for what he believed. Scott was a proud patriot of this country and unapologetically supported his nation. He will be remembered for his sense of humor and the love he had for his family; he especially cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren. They were his pride and joy, and he loved them dearly. The family is comforted by the many wonderful memories and legacy of love and knowledge he leaves behind.

In addition to his wife, he is also survived by a son, Dallas Matern, and his wife, Ashlee; a daughter, Britany Matern of Newfoundland; four grandchildren: Anthony, Abriella, Violet, and Dalton; a brother, Edward Matern; and four sisters: Susan Matern, Carol Wiseman, Jean Krull, and Lorraine Matern.

Scott was also preceded in death by three brothers: William Matern, Daniel Matern, and Frederick Matern; and a daughter, Dara Muta.
