Paul Dougherty, age 82, of Honesdale, PA, formerly of Scranton, entered into eternal rest on August 5, 2025.
Born December 16, 1942, Paul was the son of the late Joseph and Catherine (McAuliffe) Dougherty, and a proud graduate of St. Patrick's High School in West Scranton. He enjoyed staying in touch with his class of 1960 classmates these many years.
Paul graduated from the University of Scranton in 1964 and then began his 35 year career as an educator in the Scranton School District, teaching first at Alexander Hamilton School. After obtaining his Master's Degree from the University of Scranton, he became principal of Charles Sumner School, a role he cherished for 30 years until his retirement. Paul was an innovative educator who took great pride in the achievements of his students and staff. Paul later attended Lehigh University obtaining his Superintendent's Certification.
Paul is survived by his wife of 20 years, Margaret Fox Dougherty, whose loving care enabled him to live out his days peacefully at home. He was also greatly loved by his children, Judy Dougherty Lang (Gerard) of Westfield, NJ, and Paul Dougherty (Tricia) of Scranton. He will be missed by his four grandchildren, Patrick and Molly Dougherty and Gerard and Annabel Lang. He never tired of expressing his pride in them and his passionate belief in the importance of education and of seizing opportunity. Paul is also survived by his sister, Ellen Kay Padden (Thomas) of Norristown, PA, as well as many nephews, nieces and cousins.
While his health allowed, Paul was a lively competitor who relished his basketball games, golf matches, bowling leagues, and a good game of pool.
Paul's family thanks Allied Hospice for their care and kindness.
