Louis Poltanis

January 1, 1928 — June 5, 2018

Louis Poltanis, 90, of Clinton Township, Waymart passed away Tuesday afternoon, June 5, 2018 at Regional Hospital of Scranton after an illness. His wife, Catherine “Kitty” (Brownell) Poltanis preceded him in death in 1998.

Born January 17, 1928 in Clinton Township, he was the son of the late William and Julia (Kobrick) Poltanis.

Louis graduated from Waymart High School, Class of 1946.  He served in the US Army from 1946 until his honorable discharge in 1948. For many years he was the milkman for Silvercrest Dairy.  While residing in Buffalo, New York, he worked for the Chevrolet engine assembly plant.  In later years, Louis worked for ChromaTube; prior to retirement he was a clerk and salesman at Mermelstein’s in Childs.  For many years, Louis planted large gardens and had a small chicken farm.  He operated a truck farm where he sold produce and eggs in the local community. Louis was a proud member of the NRA.  An avid outdoorsman and hunter, he enjoyed teaching youth at YMCA in Carbondale where he was a marksman instructor.  Louis enjoyed fishing trips with his son to the Thousand Islands where he spent time at Alexander Bay.  He was an avid woodworker and gunsmith who also crafted his own knives. 

He is survived by a son, William Poltanis and his wife Gwen; a daughter, Cathy Poltanis, all of Waymart; two granddaughters:  Allie Poltanis of Olyphant, and Abbey Poltanis of Manchester, NH; and a sister:  Rose Keast of Vestal, NY.

Louis was also preceded in death by two brothers:  John Poltanis and William Poltanis.

The Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, June 8, 2018 at 11:00 AM in St. Mary’s Church, 242 Carbondale Road, Waymart, PA 18472.

A viewing will be held in the church on Friday morning from 10:00 AM until the time of the mass.

Burial will be in The Waymart Cemetery at Canaan Corners on Friday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Louis’ memory to The Dessin Animal Shelter, 138 Miller Drive, Honesdale, PA 18431.
