Kathryn Sandvik

Kathryn Elisa Sandvik, 69, of Pleasant Mount, PA, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, August 23, 2025 after an illness. Her husband of more than 43 years, Carl William Sandvik survives her. They were married on February 27, 1982 at Asbury United Methodist Church in Crestwood, NY.

Born December 5, 1955 in Bronxville, New York, she was the daughter of Aino Maria (Nisumaa) Backstrand and the late Elis Sigfrid Backstrand, and younger sister of the late Linda Maria Sargent.

Kathy grew up in Crestwood, New York, was a graduate of Roosevelt High School in Yonkers, and earned an associate's degree from Berkeley College in White Plains. After working several years at Magnetic Analysis Corporation in Mount Vernon and the birth of their first child, Carl and Kathy moved to their home in Pennsylvania where together, they raised their two children, Elisa Aino and Karl Erik. Kathy was a homemaker and found great fulfillment in being a wife and mother. She was a member of the Rebekah's Lodge in Lake Como. Proud of her Finnish heritage, Kathy was involved with several Finnish and Scandinavian organizations.

When her children were school aged, Kathy went to work at the former Brown's Country Store in Pleasant Mount. She later became the office manager at the Magisterial District Court with Judge Ronald Edwards in Northern Wayne County. Kathy enjoyed working there many years until her retirement in 2019.

She loved hummingbirds and enjoyed feeding and watching them among the beautiful flowers at her home. Kathy's dedication to her family is where she found her greatest fulfillment. She devoted her time and effort to being a caregiver to her sister, Linda, mother, Aino, and husband, Carl. They were truly each other's best friend.

In addition to her husband and mother, she is also survived by two children: Elisa Aino Truscott and her husband Brian of League City, Texas, and Karl Erik Sandvik and his wife Jasmine of Willis, Texas; three grandchildren: Aila Kathryn Truscott, Alina Jean Truscott, and Jouko Eino Sandvik; and several relatives in Finland and Sweden.

In accordance with Kathy's wishes, there will be no services.

Arrangements and cremation are entrusted to Howell Family Funeral Home, Inc., Edward R. Howell, Funeral Director, 269 Belmont Street, Waymart, PA 18472. www.HowellFamilyFuneralHome.com
