John P. Zalon, 85, of Canaan Township, Wayne County, died peacefully on Friday night, September 5, 2025, at Wayne Woodlands Manor. He is survived by his wife, Margarete Lieb Zalon. They would have been married 42 years this October and celebrated 50 years together this year.
Born December 14, 1939, in New York, New York, John was the only child of the late Louis and Helen F. Malinak Zalon. He spent his early years in the Bronx. He grew up singing with his father and developed a wonderful baritone singing voice.
John was a graduate of Sewanhaka High School in Floral Park, New York. He received his bachelor's degree from Hunter College and a master's degree from New York University. John served in the Army National Guard. He was proud of being an Expert and Sharpshooter with the rifle. John was a driver education teacher at Merrick and John F. Kennedy High Schools in Nassau County, New York. John became a real estate agent after moving to Wayne County.
John loved tennis and played on his college team. He was an avid saltwater fisherman and enjoyed sailing and horseback riding. Upon moving to Pennsylvania, he became an enthusiastic and skilled hunter. John loved dogs, including his Blackie. He enjoyed traveling and practicing his Spanish language skills at every opportunity. He will be forever remembered for his quick wit and outgoing personality. He was a caring husband who will be greatly missed.
John was preceded in death by his favorite cousin, Paul Zalon.
Anthony Imbalzano, Eric Mousley, Anthony Imbalzano Jr., and their families are thanked for their years of friendship and kindness. Thanks are extended to the staff at Wayne Memorial Hospital and Wayne Woodlands Manor for the care John received during the last few weeks of his life.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at 11:00 AM with Pastor Wendy D'Agostino officiating at the Howell Family Funeral Home, Inc., Edward R. Howell, Funeral Director, 269 Belmont Street, Waymart, PA 18472.
Friends are invited to visit on Friday, September 12, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the funeral home.
Interment will be private at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in John's memory to the Dessin Animal Shelter, 138 Miller Drive, Honesdale, PA 18431, or the Nursing Foundation of Pennsylvania, 3605 Vartan Way, Suite 203, Harrisburg, PA 17110.
