John Haggerty

John L. Haggerty, 81, of Clinton Township, Waymart, died peacefully on Saturday morning, June 22, 2024 at home. His beloved wife, the former Margaret McDonough survives him. Married on September 6, 1969, they would have celebrated 55 years of marriage later this year.

Born August 25, 1942 in Mt. Pleasant Township, he was the son of the late Leo and Margaret (O'Hara) Haggerty.

John was a graduate of Pleasant Mount High School. He went on to serve in the United States Army National Guard before he and Margaret married and started their family. A carpenter by trade, John was a member of the Carpenters Union #445 for 55 years. He was also a member of St. Mary's Church in Waymart. John's life revolved around his family; he was faithfully devoted to his wife, children and grandchildren. When his children were young he was an assistant Boy Scout Leader and a softball coach. John was also a member of the Lions Club and the Waymart Golf Club at Memorial Links.

In sharing his skills and craftsman abilities with his children, he was the President of the Midnight Construction Co. which involved late night projects that he and his children worked on together. John was a member of the White Oak Hunting Club where he spent many years with friends and loved ones at the Rat's Nest. Preferring to look after others rather than hunt, he was the hunting club cook and enjoyed making many meals for everyone there.

John will be remembered for his kind and quiet demeanor, but more than anything, the love he had for his family will never be forgotten and his memory will live on in the lives of those who were blessed to know him.

He is also survived by six children, Christine Kwiatkowski and her companion Wayne Maychek of Waymart; Kevin Haggerty and his wife Denise of Honesdale, David Haggerty and his wife Stephanie of Pleasant Mount, Melissa Getz and her husband James of Waymart, Julie Farley and her husband Pat of Waymart, and Shawn Haggerty and his wife Christine of Lakeville; 12 grandchildren, Connor, Jenna, Emily, Hayden, Preston, Katie, Matt, Liam, Grady, Michael, Kadie, and Chris; two sisters, Rose Marie Komar, and Ruth Ann Bonham and her husband Bob of Honesdale; and a sister-in-law, JoAnne Haggerty of Honesdale; and many nieces and nephews.

John was also preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Haggerty; two sisters, Julia Ann Shino and her husband George, and Kathryn Kelly and her husband Jerry; and a brother-in-law, John Komar.

The Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at 10:00 AM in St. Mary's Church, 242 Carbondale Road, Waymart, with Rev. Joseph Sitko and Deacon Edward Kelly officiating. Everyone attending is asked to go directly to the church on Wednesday morning.
