John B. Dunning, Sr., 90, of Waymart died Sunday afternoon, July 6, 2025 at Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton after an illness. His beloved wife of 38 years, the former Mary Anne Mackle survives him. They were married on June 5, 1987.
Born at home in Dreher Township, Wayne County, he was the son of the late Stephen and Louise (Grob) Dunning.
Jack graduated from Grover Cleveland High School in Caldwell, New Jersey in 1954. Prior to his retirement in 1987, he was a Psychiatric Security Aide at the former Farview State Hospital in Waymart; Jack was always proud to reminisce about his years of service there. An avid sports enthusiast, he played softball for many years. Jack played locally on the Blue Mountain League and also for the Saddlebrook and Waymart Milling teams. He was known by many as "Ripper," a nickname that stuck with him most of his life. Perhaps his greatest joy was all the hours he spent fishing on Lake Ontario. He loved to fish, and especially enjoyed being out on the water at his favorite place. His dog, Annie, was his faithful friend, and was always at this side. Jack will be remembered as a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children: Cheryl Gray, John B. Dunning, Jr., Dona Rosario, and Shaun Dunning and his wife Megan; two step-children: Kelly White and her husband Tom; and James Vinton and his wife Karen; several grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.
Jack was also preceded in death by a son, Howard S. Dunning; and a daughter, Bethlynn Dunning; and two brothers, Richard Dunning and Elwood Dunning.
Jack's family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Jennica, Melissa, and Justin, and the entire staff at Wayne Woodlands Manor for the wonderful care and compassion provided to Jack and the family.
The Funeral will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, July 10, with Pastor Sal Maiorana officiating at the Howell Family Funeral Home, Inc., Edward R. Howell, Funeral Director, 269 Belmont Street, Waymart, PA 18472.
Friends and family may visit from 5-7 PM on Wednesday, July 9, at the funeral home.
Interment will be in The Waymart Cemetery at Canaan Corners.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jack's memory to The Waymart Church, 596 Honesdale Road, Waymart, PA 18472.
