Carl William Sandvik, 74, of Pleasant Mount, PA, passed away peacefully at the Forest City Nursing Home on Friday night, March 27, 2026 after an illness. His wife of 43 years, Kathryn Elisa (Backstrand) Sandvik preceded him in death on August 23, 2025. They were married on February 27, 1982 at Asbury United Methodist Church in Crestwood, NY.
Born February 11, 1952 in Mount Vernon, New York, he was the son of the late Wilbert Axel Sandvik and Astrid Alice (Anderson) Sandvik Swanson.
Carl grew up in Pelham, New York, was a graduate of Pelham Memorial High School, and earned an Associate's Degree from Westchester Community College. After the birth of their first child, Carl and Kathy moved to the log cabin he built in Pennsylvania where together, they raised their two children, Elisa Aino and Karl Erik. He spent many years commuting to/from New York state, working as a foreman at Transkrit Business Forms Printing Company in Brewster, eventually working his way up to supervisor status. In 1993, the company made plans to relocate to Virginia. Not wanting to move the family, he found employment at Specialty Records (later WEA Manufacturing and then Cinram) in Olyphant, PA, where he started on the loading dock putting pallets on trucks and eventually worked up to operating the machines that printed the artwork and labels on compact discs and DVDs. He also enjoyed training new screen printing operators. Carl retired around 2009.
A reflective and thoughtful man, Carl enjoyed solitude, and enjoyed the quiet peace of the great outdoors, especially at the pond he built on his property. An avid outdoorsman, Carl enjoyed hiking, backpacking, fishing and camping the pond. In the winter, he spent his free time snowmobiling, ice fishing, and taking his children ice skating on the pond. Carl always found ways to enjoy the beauty of the wilderness that surrounded him and he loved his family more than anything in this world.
Carl is survived by two children: Elisa Aino Truscott and her husband Brian of League City, Texas, and Karl Erik Sandvik and his wife Jasmine of Willis, Texas; three grandchildren: Aila Kathryn Truscott, Alina Jean Truscott, and Jouko Eino Sandvik; and a brother, William Sandvik and his wife Sharon of Wayland, NY.
In accordance with Carl's wishes, there will be no services.
Arrangements and cremation are entrusted to Howell Family Funeral Home, Inc., Edward R. Howell, Funeral Director, 269 Belmont Street, Waymart, PA 18472. www.HowellFamilyFuneralHome.com
